Automatic Upmix
Listening to surround sound is a very natural way of perceiving audio. As in nature the listener is wrapped in sound and room response instead of sitting in front of an artificial stereo audio stage.
Unfortunately, not all audio is produced in surround sound and thus the audience is often facing frequent changeovers between stereo and surround sound. On the other hand, consistent surround playback translates to added sales value for HD programs and other high end user formats.
To avoid switching between different channel formats Jünger Audio has developed an Upmix algorithm that automatically detects and unfolds stereo and even mono sources to play back in surround sound.
Upmix uses a complex combination of matrix decoding and dynamic modulation to deconstruct the stereo source into discrete components and ambience signals that feed the front and rear channels accordingly.
Upmix’s special quality is in the high separation and inaudible modulation, resulting in a very realistic and stable sound field. Its character can be selected from simple profiles that vary the sound projection from an ‘in front of stage’- to a ‘wrapped in sound’-like listening experience.
A standard profile guarantees acoustic transparency between the original source and the re-downmixed Upmix. This becomes important if an independent stereo stream is not available and the stereo receiver system must rely on a fold-down from the surround stream.
The system can be set to suit any playback scenario and provides a low-latency mode with a minimum processing time of only 3 milliseconds. To create a full surround experience the Upmix incorporates a powerful effect gate for the low frequency effects (LFE) channel which is designed to extract a realistic LFE signal and not only statically redirecting bass energy from the input.
